Prisoner tries to escape custody in Wollongong
A prisoner has allegedly tried to steal a gun from a guard in a desperate attempt to escape custody at Wollongong Hospital on the weekend.
The incident happened on Saturday afternoon at the hospital, where the 34-year-old was under guard after complaining of abdominal pain.
It's alleged he punched a Corrective Services officer in the face and tried to steal his firearm before running from the hospital down Crown Street.
Corrective Services officers chased him, firing two shots during the chase. No-one was injured.
The man was eventually arrested and charged to front court in January next year.
