Double demerits in force from tonight

Wollongong and Lake Illawarra Police will saturate local roads from midnight tonight until Monday as part of Easter road blitz Operation Tortoise.

They'll be targetting speeding, drink driving, driver fatigue and people not wearing a seatbelt over the long weekend. Double demerits will also be in force.

Wollongong Highway Patrol Senior Constable Adam Tregonning says the key to road safety at Easter is patience and being aware of other motorists.

Last year, the four-day blitz across the state led to close to 5,700 people caught speeding - there were also 550 major crashes leaving more than 180 people injured.
