Former PM Gough Whitlam dead at 98
Former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam has been described as a "source of inspiration" after passing away at his Sydney nursing home this morning at the age of 98.
Mr Whitlam was Australia's 21st Prime Minister, leading Labor to power for the first time in 23 years at the 1972 election.
He won the 1974 election before being controversially dismissed by Governor-General Sir John Kerr at the climax of the 1975 Australian
Mr Whitlam's children have released a statement saying their loving and generous father was a source of inspiration for millions of Australians.
Prime Minster Tony Abbott has described Mr Whitlam as a giant of his time...who inspired a legion of young people to get involved in public life.
There will be a private cremation and a public memorial service and Australian flags will fly at half mast today.
