Copper thieves spark fire in Unanderra
Police are investigating after copper thieves caused a fire at a steel manufacturing business in Unanderra yesterday.
Police say an electrical "blackout" occurred at the business around 4.40pm.
Security staff then spotted a grass fire - they also noticed entry had been gained through a hole in the fence to an area housing copper wire.
The alarm and power had been disabled after the offenders cut through 33,000 volts of electricity, which had in turn sparked the small blaze.
Copper wiring had been removed from its casing and a burnt hacksaw had been left behind.
Police say the offenders most likely suffered serious burns in the incident, but so far no-one has presented to Wollongong or Shellharbour Hospitals.
