Gruber axed from the Wollongong Hawks

The Wollongong Hawks have dropped a bombshell, parting ways with centre Dave Gruber.

Into his sixth year with the club, 33-year-old Gruber has been released from his one-year contract, saying a shake up of the roster is needed for the club to stay competitive after a slow start to the season.

Wollongong Hawks Owner James Spenceley says it was an extremely difficult decision, and understands fans won't be happy about it.

Gruber's replacement has been announced as playmaker Rhys Martin, who ended a six-season stint with the club in March to explore options in Europe.
