Police warn shoppers to keep an eye on their handbags

 

A Warrawong man has been charged after he allegedly stole a woman's purse from a shopping trolley in Burelli Street Wollongong and tried to use her credit cards.

The 37 year old has been refused bail to front Wollongong Local Court today.

Inspector Steve Heggarty from Wollongong Police says officers located the man in a nearby club and arrested him.

"They attempted to bring him back to Wollongong Police Station before he's decamped on foot, the male was chased by police before he was arrested in a car park in Burelli Street. He was searched and during the search, police located some property that was stolen from in the handbag."

The man's been charged with escape police custody, steal from person and dishonestly obtain property by deception.
